Who We Are

Abacus Edutech's two directors, Joe and Paul met as undergraduates at the University of Birmingham in 1998. Joe graduated with a BSc Hons (2:1) in Mathematical Sciences and a MSc (distinction) in Computer Science, whilst Paul graduated with a BSc Hons (2:1) in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Following this, Joe worked for two years in software development before studying for his PGCE in Secondary Education at Oxford Brookes University and then starting employment as a teacher of mathematics. Joe progressed to Head of Maths, then Assistant Headteacher, before becoming Deputy Headteacher.

Over that same period, Paul has gained huge experience working in a variety of development, consultancy and technical architecture roles. He has delivered countless projects for well-known high street brands, as well as clinical systems for the Department for Health.

In his work as a senior leader in school, it became increasingly apparent to Joe that various needs of the SEND department in his school were not being adequately met by any IT systems that already existed. Joe discussed some initial ideas with Paul who used his substantial development experience to turn ideas into designs.

In January 2022, with a clear aim and design in place for their first web-based application, TA Timetabler in place, Abacus Edutech was born, with the aim of supporting schools, their SEND departments and, most importantly, their pupils.

Development of  TA Timetabler is now complete and the application is available for use in secondary schools in England and Wales. It is the UK's first web-based application dedicated to the efficient scheduling of teaching assistants.
